How To: Writing SEO Articles

Here are some SEO Article Writing Tips. This “how to” should help you produce well-written, search optimized “sales pitch”. I say sales pitch because all writing should be done from the perspective that you are selling something – as an Internet Marketer, your job is to make money by recommending products and services. If you are marketing for yourself, the same thing applies!

Don’t Overping – You’ll get Blacklisted

Make sure and preview often until it is just right, then, publish it only once. We don’t want to get blacklisted by the various ping services that I’ve setup for you in wordpress.  The ping list is a list of blog notification servers that tell the world about your new post.    They will blacklist you if you publish repeatedly – so make sure to use the “save draft” and preview buttons copiously before actually publishing.

All Article Titles Should be based on a valuable keyword

Keep the title of the article concise and focused on the key phrase. Don’t make a long sentence when 3 or 4 words could do. This applies to the main title as it will be the file name and sub headers.

250 Words Minimum Length for Best Search Engine Optimization

You can write longer articles, but long articles will not help your SEO efforts. They need to be at least 250 words, but other than that, only as long as you need to get your written point across.  Shorter articles are better usually because they are more focused on a certain key phrase – keep the rambling (like this) to a minimum.

Focus on 1 keyword Per Article

You can stem the keyword (run, ran, running, runs), but do not try to target vastly different keywords. Instead write additional articles and link to them.

VERY Carefully Consider Each Link

Link only to:

  1. yourself and your other posts,
  2. main suppliers
  3. huge name brands in your industry
  4. sites that are hugely bigger than you, and on the exact same topic

It’s best to only sparingly link offsite. In your articles, do not refer to someone else’s site for useful information, instead rewrite it in an article for your own site (don’t plagarize though). When you link, link using keywords, not “click here”.  If possible, find a way to link to your own articles 1 or 2 times in each post / page that you do.

Use varying elements in the HTML, but not do not use inline style

Don’t use inline style comments or formatting (font, style=, etc) but do use lists, headers, strong, emphasis. If you need formatting, use your stylesheets and separate design from structure as much as possible. The exception is obvious things like tables of data where CSS is not a very elegant solution.

Include a Picture With Every Article

Pictures do not need to be relevant, but this helps conversion if they are. The exact picture doesn’t matter, but try to connect with the reader emotionally. Remember – a picture says a thousands words.  Preferrably you want to use a different picture for article.  Use JavaScript Frame Breakout and read my post about why images are important.

Optimize what you wrote for the Main Key Phrase

The phrase should not be stuffed, but you should use variations when possible, here are examples for “freelance writing”:

bad: This topic is freelance writing. Freelance writing is a great job. Freelance writing is fun… You will like it.

good: You want to be a freelance writer? Freelance Writing isn’t for everyone, though getting paid to write is very fun. Try writing articles for money, you just may like it!

Notice how the bad example repeated exactly the same phrase and then used reference words like “this topic” and “it”. The good example used stemming (variations).

A good rule of thumb is the phrase should be used only 1 or maybe 2 times throughout the entire article, the title should be the phrase, and if you have alt text in a picture that matches, use it there too. Put the keyword in em or strong tags (you only need one word bolded/emphasized, not all variants). Do not hide, stuff, or otherwise cheat in anyway. The variations can be used many times and should appear like natural speech.

Post or Page in Wordpress?

It doesn’t matter really. Posts allow for comments, pages don’t In general comments are good. Certain things like: about us, privacy, contact, etc should be pages. Tutorials and articles should be posts.

What topics are Best for SEO Articles?

Pick from the article keyword research that I did for you, or visit Google Keyword Tool and do additional research. There are many other topics too, but any of the keywords that I’ve researched for you will work.

How to write Search Engine Optimized articles quickly

  • Start with an outline of the topics you want to cover
  • Use keyword research to help with topic ideas
  • Have a list of variant words handy while you write for stemming ideas.
  • After you have an outline, go back and fill it out with a sentence or two.
  • Write the introduction and conclusion (if they exist) at the same time, after the outline is done so your thoughts flow better.
  • After the article is written I go back and stem the keywords for a better SEO Article.
  • Do not do formatting / code until the writing is complete, it will impede your ability to write an effective article.

Schedule Your Articles for Distribution

Don’t write and publish all of your articles at once. Use the scheduling feature of wordpress to release content consistently (like every other day, or once a week). This settings is in the “publish” section on a post. Google gives you a slight boost for keeping fresh content on your blog/website. Use this to your advantage and schedule your articles to come at least once a week.

Other SEO Copywriting Techniques

This is the technique I use to crank out articles that are well designed for SEO. Other techniques that work are to record yourself talking about a product or service, then transcribe it into a well-written, emotional article. You can also record your best salesperson and listen to the things they talk about. The challenge is writing for both humans and search engines.

If you haven’t already done so, please read my articles on psychographic profiling and sales letter writing. This post is about how to write SEO articles, but you have to apply the big picture (which is selling a product or service online) to what you write.
